It’s official:
Former Rep. Abby Finkenauer is running for US Senate in Iowa!
With this announcement, Abby becomes the clear frontrunner in a primary whose winner will likely face seven-term incumbent Sen. Chuck Grassley—a formidable foe, but one whose popularity has recently waned substantially.
Just last month, a Des Moines Register poll found that only 27 percent of likely Iowa voters would re-elect Sen. Grassley. Polling at this point in any race should be taken with a grain of salt, but the Registeris known for publishing some of the most accurate in the nation.
And Sen. Grassley hasn’t actually announced yet if he’s running in 2022. His age—he will turn 88 in September, and is the second-oldest sitting Senator—and tenure have led to speculation he might retire, which could break this race open into a tossup.
Whether he retires or not, Abby is the perfect candidate to flip this seat. During her prior stint in Congress, she was a champion for working-class Iowans, and supported legislation to expand rural Iowans’ access to medical care, make child care assistance more widely available, and support small businesses.
