Two weeks ago, Palo Alto Online profiled our executive director, Stacy Mason, and our outreach director, Shannon Cassidy, about WomenCount’s nearly decade-long effort to engage more women in the political process.
WomenCount started as a nationwide ad campaign that pushed back against calls for Hillary Clinton to drop out of the 2008 presidential primary. Now, we’ve blossomed into an online community of 20,000 activists and donors who are committed to fostering women’s political participation.
Our goal all along has been to provide this kind of online community for women, who often face hostility as well as calls to “drop out” of grassroots online spaces when they raise their voices in support of political issues. And crowdfunding is an unexplored frontier in online political activism, so that’s where we wanted to focus our activism in 2016.
We know that when women run, women win—but first they have to know they’ll get the grassroots support and funding they need to win.
