The dog days of summer are here, and with them, the final primaries of the 2024 cycle.
Coming up in just five short days—on August 6—are state and federal primary elections in Michigan and Washington.
We’re watching one major US Senate race, eight US House races, and 34 state legislative primaries across both states.
- US House, MI-1: Teacher and lawyer Callie Barr is in a close primary with Marquette County medical director Bob Lorinser to take on Republican Rep. Jack Bergman in November. Callie is endorsed by our partner Vote Mama.
- US House, MI-10: Activist Emily Busch has been endorsed by every major gun safety group, but she’s an underdog to former Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Carl Marlinga in the primary. The winner will take on Republican Rep. John James.
- MI House, 7: Tonya Myers Phillips, an attorney at the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice, is in a three-way primary for this open, safe D seat that will be a gain for women if she wins.
- MI House, 13: Rep. Mai Xiong just won this Democratic seat in a special election, but to keep it she’ll need to survive a strong primary challenge from former state Rep. Richard Steenland. Mai is endorsed by our partner The Next 50.
- US House, WA-5: There are a few Democratic women in this crowded primary for the competitive seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, but former diplomat and prosecutor Carmela Conroy is the strongest candidate.
- US House, WA-6: This is an open, likely D seat with two qualified women running. But state Sen. Emily Randall has been endorsed by Sen. Patty Murray and, if elected, would be the first out LGBTQ Latina elected to Congress.
- WA House, 3: Natasha Hill is an attorney and editor of The Black Lens, Spokane’s only Black newspaper. She is in a close primary with former president of Spokane City Council Ben Stuckart for this safe D seat.
- WA House, 23: Brynn Felix is an attorney with the ACLU of Washington, and the only Democratic woman among four candidates for this safe D seat, including incumbent state Rep. Greg Nance.
Check the slate a week from now for our picks in Wisconsin, where primaries are happening August 13.
