Nancy Pelosi
Today, California Rep. Nancy Pelosi announced she is retiring from Congress. There are not enough words to describe the enormity of her accomplishments and the impact she has had on this country.
Simply, she is one of the most consequential women in US history.
- When she was elected House Minority Leader in 2003, she was the first woman of either party to hold the position.
- In 2006 she cemented her place in the history books when she was first elected to the Speakership, becoming the first woman ever to hold that position.
- When she entered Congress in 1987, there were 12 women in the House Democratic Caucus, only 23 women total in the House, and only two in the Senate.
- Now, there are 110 Democratic women and 151 women of both parties in the House and Senate, and 75 percent of the Democratic caucus is made up of women, people of color and LGBTQ people.
- Since her Speakership, her tenure in the US House has been marked by a relentless pursuit of a Democratic-controlled House, which we’re sure she will continue during her final term.
That’s why today we’re rolling out the Nancy Pelosi Legacy Slate—the most endangered House women incumbents and top non-incumbents in 2026.
Donate today to honor her legacy—we plan to update the former Speaker with the slate’s progress.
