The dreaded day is here: Donald Trump will be sworn in for his second term at noon on today.
We honor that everyone will do what’s right for them to mark the moment, and it’s personal. For us, the pomp and circumstance are not worth our emotional energy, which we should preserve to fight the Trump administration’s worst policies.
Instead, we’ll be walking in the woods, smashing stuff in a ‘rage room,’ or volunteering at the local food bank—because it’s also Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when we are called to give back to our communities.
We’ll also be thinking deeply about our mission. At the federal level over the next two years, winning back the House must be our biggest focus. And we have to hold the seats of Democratic women who will be top targets.
In recognition of MLK Day, we also want to highlight two candidates, both Black women who have run extraordinarily savvy, competitive races:
- Emilia Sykes (OH-13), who was first elected in 2022, preserving a Democrat-held, northeast Ohio seat that’s emblematic of the types of working-class areas where the party is struggling. She won last year by 2 points; and
- Janelle Bynum (OR-5), who flipped a suburban Portland district of the type that Democrats are increasingly relying on as a base of support. She won last year by 3 points.
Give now and help women get a head start on flipping the House in 2026.
