Senate Democrats are digging in to filibuster Gorsuch, and right now it looks like they have the votes to pull it off. Those Democrats who will hold the 60-vote mandate include three swing-state Democrats — Sens. Tammy Baldwin, Claire McCaskill and Debbie Stabenow — whose states went for Trump last year.
No doubt, this vote will pop up in attack ads against them next year. Show these three women that you’ll have their backs in 2018 by chipping in $5 to each of them through our Political Courage slate.
Senate Republicans are wringing their hands right now about polarization and partisanship, but we’re not falling for it. For more than a year, they stalled and made excuses, refusing to even meet with President Obama’s nominee for this open seat, Merrick Garland.
Garland is a well-respected, qualified, moderate jurist. Gorsuch is an extremist, far from the kind of nominee who could be considered a compromise choice.
The bottom line is: filling this Supreme Court vacancy is a choice that was essentially stolen from President Obama. Gorsuch’s nomination strains the meaning of legitimacy, and Democrats are responding in the only meaningful way they can.
