Each November, Native American Heritage Month invites us to honor the original peoples of this land—their histories, cultures and ongoing leadership in every part of American life.
For us, it’s a chance to lift up the Native women who are reshaping our democracy right now.
- Deb Haaland (Laguna Pueblo) made history as the first Native American cabinet secretary when she became Secretary of the Interior. Now, she’s running for New Mexico governor.
- Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (White Earth Nation), Minnesota’s 50th lieutenant governor and the first woman of color elected to statewide office there. She’s running for US Senate.
- Rep. Sharice Davids (Ho-Chunk), who represents KS-3 in the US House. Alongside Deb Haaland, she was one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress.
- Erin Farris-Olsen (Brothertown Indian Nation), a nonprofit leader and former clerk for the Montana Supreme Court who is running for state Senate in 2026.
