Despite an onslaught of negative ads and narrowing polls in the final weeks of the campaign, Rep. Mikie Sherrill notched a decisive victory in yesterday’s Democratic primary, beating the rest of the 6-candidate field with a solid 34 percent.

It was a nail-biter to the end—and that’s just the primary. Now, she faces a tough general election.

We think of New Jersey as a reliably Democratic state, but it did have a Republican governor (Chris Christie) for eight years. The current Democratic governor, Phil Murphy, won re-election in 2021 with just 51 percent of the vote. And the guy who almost beat him—former state legislator Jack Ciattarelli—is also this year’s Republican nominee.

Mikie is going to need to run hard all the way to November. Give now to our New Jersey & Virginia Top Races slate to help her post strong numbers coming out of the primary.

We are also less than a week away from Virginia’s state primaries, where voters have the chance to nominate an all-woman statewide ticket and a historic number of women for state legislative seats. Based on our chats with local leaders:

  • Lindsey Dougherty (HD75) has the absolute toughest primary and is being outraised by her opponent;
  • Leslie Mehta (HD73) is looking better in the primary but has struggled with fundraising and is projected to have one of the toughest general campaigns;
  • Ghazala Hashmi (LG) and Shannon Taylor (AG) have both faced negative attacks in recent weeks and are struggling to fundraise.

Please support these women as well in the final days of the Virginia primary.
