Out of 38 of the world’s wealthiest nations, the US is the only one that doesn’t guarantee paid parental leave. Postpartum caregiving often falls onto mothers, which leads them experience higher levels of income loss and career disruption. Nearly one in four employed mothers returns to work within ten days of giving birth, often because they cannot afford to go without pay. The US can do better, but nothing will change without strong leaders willing to fight for the protections working families deserve.
