It’s true.
We think of 2025 as an ‘off year’ for elections, but one of the most critical contests for abortion rights is happening right now in Wisconsin.
When Judge Janet was elected and liberals took control of the state Supreme Court in 2023, they:
- Protected abortion access by blocking the state’s 1849 abortion ban, pending the decision in two cases that are currently before the Court,
And - Forced lawmakers to redraw Wisconsin’s state legislative districts, helping Democrats flip 14 state legislative seats last year. Dems can flip the state Senate in 2026 by winning two more seats.
Now, one of Wisconsin’s liberal justices is retiring, putting the Court at risk of losing the 4-3 liberal majority responsible for protecting abortion and voting rights.
Abortion rights are critical, but voting rights even more so now, as Trump guts federal oversight of our elections. It will be up to states to protect this fundamental right.
If we can hang on to voting rights at the state level—especially in swing states like Wisconsin—we can have free and fair elections in 2026 and 2028, and have a chance of turning back the MAGA tide.
It also includes Tishaura Jones, St. Louis’s first Black female mayor—a barrier breaker who we must support during this period of racist attacks on Black and female leadership.
