The next major off-year election is less than a week away.
It’s in New Jersey, where Rep. Mikie Sherrill is the only woman running to win the Democratic governor nomination on June 10.
Although the polls have her with a clear lead, her advantage has shrunk as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has gained ground, and as Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and fellow US Rep. Josh Gottheimer have released a barrage of negative ads.
Virginia is also having primaries this month, on June 17. The governor’s race is set with Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears both uncontested, meaning Virginia will elect its first female governor this year.
But down-ballot it’s another story. In the other statewide races, Ghazala Hashmi (lieutenant governor) and Shannon Taylor (attorney general) are struggling to break through. In the House of Delegates races, a record number of women are running in competitive districts—but account for only three of the top-10 major fundraisers. Leslie Mehta (HD-73) and Lindsey Dougherty (HD-75) currently have the toughest primaries.
Women running in down-ballot races like these are our pipeline for future governor candidates. In a country with only 12 female governors—four of whom are Democratic women leaving office next year—we must make sure that pipeline doesn’t run dry.
